French Bulldog Color FAQ's

  • Does color affect a French Bulldog's personality?

No — a French Bulldog’s color or coat pattern has zero bearing on its personality. Temperament is shaped by genetics (from the parents), socialization, and the environment the puppy is raised in. A blue Frenchie, a merle Frenchie, and a standard fawn Frenchie raised the same way will have the same loving temperament. That’s why we focus on socialization and matching each puppy with the right family, regardless of color.

  • Are rare color French Bulldogs less healthy?

Not when bred responsibly. The myth that rare colors like blue, lilac, or merle are inherently unhealthy comes from irresponsible breeders who prioritize color over health testing. When both parents are genetically tested and cleared for conditions like CMR1, DM, HUU, and JHC, rare color Frenchies are just as healthy as standard colors. The key is choosing a breeder who can show you DNA test results — not just tell you the puppy is “healthy.” We health-test every breeding dog regardless of color.

  • Which French Bulldog colors are most expensive?

Rare and exotic colors command higher prices because of the additional genetic testing, selective breeding, and smaller gene pools involved. From most to least expensive: Fluffy Frenchies (long-haired, caused by the Lh gene) are the priciest, followed by Lilac, Merle, and Blue. Standard AKC colors like fawn, cream, brindle, and pied are at the lower end of the price range. Our puppies range from $3,500–$6,500 depending on color, lineage, and gender. View available puppies.

  • What's the difference between standard and rare French Bulldog colors?

Standard AKC colors include fawn, cream, brindle, pied, and white — these are recognized for AKC show competitions and are the most common. Rare/exotic colors include blue, lilac, merle, isabella, and fluffy (long-haired). Rare colors are produced by specific gene combinations (like the dilute gene dd for blue, or the Lh gene for fluffy coats). They’re not AKC show-eligible but can be AKC registered as pets. The rarity and additional breeding complexity is what drives higher pricing.

We started Ethical Frenchie because buying a dog shouldn't feel like a gamble.

After spending hours wading through “Add to Cart” puppy sites and Craigslist scams just to find our own dog Vilma, I knew there had to be a better way. 10+ years later, we’ve built what we wished existed — a transparent, anxiety-free process where you actually know the people behind your puppy.
