Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about French Bulldogs and working with Ethical Frenchie.

About Ethical Frenchie

  • What makes Ethical Frenchie different from other breeders?

At Ethical Frenchie, we prioritize ethical practices over profits. We raise each puppy by hand in our home, ensuring they receive individualized love and attention. Our commitment to transparency, health testing, and lifetime support sets us apart. We offer the strongest health guarantee in the industry because we back up our breeding practices with results.

  • Do you offer a health guarantee? What does it cover?

Yes — we offer one of the strongest health guarantees in the industry. Every Ethical Frenchie puppy comes with a written health guarantee that covers genetic and congenital conditions. Our breeding dogs are tested for CMR1, DM, HUU, and JHC before any litter is produced, which means we can confidently stand behind the health of every puppy. If a covered condition arises, we work directly with your family to make it right. We also provide a full veterinary health check before your puppy leaves us, complete with vaccination records and deworming documentation. Contact us for the full details of our guarantee.

  • Where are you located? Do you deliver nationwide?

We have two family homes — one in New York City and one in Chicago — and raise our puppies in a home environment at both locations. We personally deliver every puppy nationwide — the same person you FaceTime with is the person who hands you your puppy. No middlemen, no third parties. We also offer local pickup for families in the NYC or Chicago metro areas. We serve families in Boston, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Raleigh, and everywhere in between.

  • Can I visit and meet the puppies before purchasing?

Yes! We welcome and encourage visits. We want you to feel 100% confident in your decision, and meeting your puppy (and their parents) in person is the best way to do that. We have family homes in both New York City and Chicago — just reach out to schedule a time at whichever location your puppy is at. For families who can’t visit in person, we’re happy to FaceTime or video call so you can see your puppy and ask any questions before committing. Any breeder who won’t let you see the puppies on video is a red flag.

  • What health testing do your breeding dogs go through?

Every one of our adult French Bulldogs goes through extensive veterinary exams and genetic testing before breeding. Our dogs are tested and cleared for:

    • CMR1 (Canine Multifocal Retinopathy) — an inherited eye condition
    • DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) — a progressive spinal cord disease
    • HUU (Hyperuricosuria) — a urinary condition causing bladder stones
    • JHC (Juvenile Hereditary Cataracts) — early-onset cataracts

We also screen for hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and cardiac issues. We invest $5,000–$50,000+ per breeding female in health testing because cutting corners isn’t an option when you’re putting your name behind every puppy.

  • What questions should I ask a French Bulldog breeder?

Important questions to ask any French Bulldog breeder:

    • Can you provide health testing results for both parents?
    • Can I meet the parent dogs?
    • Are the puppies registered with AKC or another reputable organization?
    • What health guarantee do you provide?
    • Can you provide references from previous clients?
    • How do you socialize your puppies?
    • What ongoing support do you offer after purchase?
    • Are you transparent about which puppies you bred directly vs. sourced from other breeders?

About the Breed

  • What health issues should I know about with French Bulldogs?

French Bulldogs can be prone to several health conditions due to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) structure:

    • Breathing issues: Due to their shortened airways (BOAS - Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome)
    • Overheating: Difficulty regulating body temperature
    • Hip dysplasia: Joint development problems
    • Allergies and skin issues: Especially in facial folds
    • Eye problems: Various genetic eye conditions
    • Spinal issues: Including intervertebral disc disease

This is why we conduct extensive health testing on all our breeding dogs and offer strong health guarantees.

  • Are French Bulldogs good with kids?

French Bulldogs are one of the best breeds for families with children. They’re patient, playful, and naturally affectionate — they love being around people of all ages. Their small but sturdy build means they can handle the energy of kids without being fragile. That said, we always recommend supervising interactions between any dog and very young children, and teaching kids how to handle a puppy gently. Most of our families have children, and the feedback is always the same — their Frenchie becomes the kids’ best friend.

  • Do French Bulldogs have separation anxiety?

French Bulldogs were bred to be companion dogs, so they do form very strong bonds with their owners. Some Frenchies can develop separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods — typically more than 6–8 hours regularly. The good news is that proper socialization from puppyhood (which we prioritize) makes a big difference. Crate training, gradual alone-time practice, and keeping a consistent routine all help. Most well-adjusted Frenchies handle normal work schedules just fine, especially if they have a companion or enrichment toys.

  • Are French Bulldogs good for first-time dog owners?

Absolutely. French Bulldogs are one of the most recommended breeds for first-time owners. They’re adaptable, low-maintenance on the exercise front, easy to groom, and eager to please. They don’t need a yard — a few short walks and some playtime is plenty. The main things first-time Frenchie owners should know: they’re sensitive to extreme heat (keep walks short on hot days), they can be stubborn during training (patience and consistency win), and they need a vet who understands brachycephalic breeds. We provide lifetime support to all our families, so you’re never figuring it out alone.

  • How big do French Bulldogs get?

French Bulldogs are a small breed, typically weighing between 20-28 pounds (9-13 kg) and standing 11-13 inches (28-33 cm) tall at the shoulder. They have a compact, muscular build with their characteristic “bat ears” and flat face that makes them so distinctive and loveable.

  • What is the typical lifespan of a French Bulldog?

French Bulldogs typically live 10–12 years, with some living even longer with proper care. The biggest factors in lifespan are genetics (which is why health testing matters so much), diet, regular veterinary checkups, weight management, and attention to their brachycephalic-specific needs like heat sensitivity and breathing. Ethically bred Frenchies from health-tested parents tend to have fewer chronic issues and longer, healthier lives. Read more in our guide on how to help your French Bulldog live longer.

  • Are French Bulldogs good apartment dogs?

Yes! French Bulldogs are excellent apartment dogs due to their small size, moderate exercise needs, and adaptable nature. They’re generally quiet, don’t require extensive exercise, and are happy to be close to their human families. Their easy-going temperament makes them perfect urban companions.

Colors & Pricing

  • How much do French Bulldog puppies cost?

Our French Bulldog puppies are priced between $3,500–$6,500 depending on color, gender, and lineage. Blue, Merle, Lilac, and Fluffy Frenchies are typically at the higher end due to the rarity and additional genetic testing required. Standard colors start at the lower end of that range. The cost reflects what it actually takes to breed ethically: artificial insemination, C-section deliveries, extensive health testing ($5,000–$50,000+ per breeding female), small litter sizes (2–4 puppies), and individualized hand-raising. We also offer financing options to make it more accessible. View our available puppies.

  • Why are French Bulldogs so expensive?

French Bulldog pricing reflects several factors:

    • Most French Bulldogs require cesarean section deliveries due to their large heads
    • Small litter sizes (typically 2-4 puppies)
    • Extensive health testing required for breeding dogs ($5,000-$50,000+ investment per quality breeding female)
    • High demand and popularity - they’re currently the most popular breed in the U.S.
    • Specialized breeding knowledge and higher veterinary costs
    • Individual hand-raising and socialization
  • Do you offer financing options?

Yes, we offer French Bulldog payment plans to help make your dream of owning an ethically bred Frenchie more accessible. Contact us to learn about our financing options and payment plan details.

  • What French Bulldog colors do you breed?

We breed a wide range of French Bulldog colors, each with their own unique personality and look:

Blue, Merle, Lilac, and Fluffy Frenchies are priced higher due to rarity and additional genetic testing. Regardless of color, health and temperament always come first. Browse our available puppies.

  • What's the difference between a French Bulldog and a Boston Terrier?

They look similar but are very different dogs. French Bulldogs are stockier (20–28 lbs vs 12–25 lbs for Bostons), calmer, and more laid-back — they’re happy to lounge on the couch all day. Boston Terriers are leaner, more energetic, and need more exercise. Frenchies have signature bat ears and a wider, more muscular build, while Bostons have a tuxedo-like coat pattern and pointier ears. Health-wise, both are brachycephalic, but Frenchies tend to have more breathing-related concerns. Temperament-wise, Frenchies are the ultimate lap dogs — they want to be glued to you. If you want a calm, affectionate companion for city living, a Frenchie is the better fit.

  • Are Blue and Merle French Bulldogs healthy?

When bred ethically with proper health testing, Blue and Merle French Bulldogs can be just as healthy as standard colors. However, it’s crucial to work with reputable breeders who conduct genetic testing. We ensure all our breeding dogs undergo comprehensive health screenings regardless of color.

Getting Your Puppy

  • How does your adoption process work?

    Our process is straightforward:

    1. Browse our available puppies and find one that catches your eye
    2. Apply — fill out our quick application so we can learn about your family and lifestyle
    3. Deposit — once approved, a deposit secures your puppy
    4. Updates — we send you photos, videos, and health updates as your puppy grows
    5. Delivery or Pickup — when your puppy is ready (typically 10–12 weeks old), we arrange local pickup in NYC or Chicago, or we personally deliver your puppy nationwide

The whole process from application to bringing your puppy home is typically 2–8 weeks depending on availability. We’re available by phone, text, or email throughout.

  • How do you deliver puppies to out-of-state families?

We personally deliver every puppy — no third parties, no strangers. Your puppy flies in-cabin with us, never in cargo, never alone. The person you FaceTime with during the process is the same person who meets you at the airport and hands you your puppy. The delivery fee covers the flight, a travel carrier, and all necessary health certificates. We’ve delivered puppies to families in every major city across the U.S. — Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and everywhere in between. Learn more about our delivery options.

  • What support do you provide after I take my puppy home?

The value of working with Ethical Frenchie truly begins after you take your baby French Bulldog home. We provide lifetime support and put you in direct contact with the original breeder so you can send updates, ask questions, and form a lasting relationship. We believe in supporting our Frenchie families throughout their dog’s entire life.

  • At what age can French Bulldog puppies go to their new homes?

French Bulldog puppies should not leave their mother before 8 weeks of age minimum. Many reputable breeders, including us, prefer to wait until 10-12 weeks to ensure proper socialization, health development, and readiness for their new homes.

  • How should I prepare for my new French Bulldog puppy?

We encourage all our families to read articles from our regularly updated education blog to ensure you’re well-informed before making this important decision. Proper preparation includes:

    • Reading about French Bulldog care and health needs
    • Puppy-proofing your home
    • Finding a veterinarian familiar with brachycephalic breeds
    • Stocking up on appropriate food, toys, and supplies
    • Understanding the importance of temperature regulation
    • Planning for ongoing training and socialization

Avoiding Scams

  • How do I spot a French Bulldog scam?

French Bulldog scams are everywhere — here are the biggest red flags:

    • Price too low — If someone is selling a Frenchie puppy for $500–$1,000, it’s almost certainly a scam. Ethical breeding costs far more than that.
    • Won’t FaceTime or video call — A real breeder will happily show you the puppy and parents on video. If they refuse, walk away.
    • Payment by gift cards, Zelle, or wire transfer only — Scammers avoid traceable payment methods.
    • No health testing documentation — Ask for specific genetic test results (CMR1, DM, HUU, JHC). Vague answers = no tests done.
    • Puppies always available in every color — Real breeders have waitlists and limited availability.
    • No physical location — They can’t tell you where the puppies are raised or let you visit.

If something feels off, trust your gut. We’re always happy to help you evaluate another breeder — just reach out.

  • Why should I avoid "faceless entities" and puppy mills?

Anyone can “add a Frenchie to cart” via puppy websites or Craigslist scams, but if this decision is important to you, you should work with a reputable breeder. Faceless entities often lack proper health testing, socialization, and ongoing support. They prioritize profits over the wellbeing of the dogs and families involved.
